Both Sides of Zero

Both Sides of Zero is upmarket, contemporary fiction about a man moving through grief and reconnecting with the world and with himself.

Hagen Tack thought he left his past behind when he fled his small Ohio hometown twelve years ago after the drowning death of his best friend, Kiki Walker. Now thirty, he is a successful but emotionally disengaged New York songwriter. Living with episodic dissociations, he uses what he hears and sees to inspire his lyrics. He sabotages relationships and finds refuge in his apartment “sanctuary,” hoarding talismans meant to keep his memories—and other people—from reaching him.

Until his neighbor’s bullets come through his apartment wall, destroying all that protected him.

With his refuge gone, Hagen returns to Somerset Vale to confront the questions he’s never dared ask about Kiki’s death. But he’s not going alone. Bound by contract to write for twenty-four-year-old Farren Bay-Brixton, an obsessive-compulsive music sensation with baggage of his own, Hagen reluctantly allows Farren to tag along—only to find his presence both maddening and strangely vital.

Back in the Vale, few are willing to dredge up an old tragedy. Intense emotions and buried secrets still fester beneath the surface of the town, scuttling Hagen’s attempts to heal from Kiki’s death. Hagen must resolve his grief, but resolution may take more than Hagen knows how to give.
